Biking, trekking and horseback riding: all the ways to experience the Island to the fullest

Discover the most beautiful routes to explore the beautiful landscapes of northeastern Sardinia

The beauty of the beaches and coves on Sardinia’s north-eastern coast is a well-known fact, but the charms of inland Gallura are less familiar. However, you only need to travel a few kilometres towards the heartland of this region to discover a wild and unspoilt part of Sardinia, where evidence of human activity is reduced to the minimum and you’ll find ancient unpaved roads that snake along the coastline and climb up above rocky walls of centuries-old granite that have been shaped by time and weather.

For lovers of hiking and cycling, there are trails winding from the coast up to the headlands. One of the most popular with outdoor sports enthusiasts is the route leading up to the summit of Monte Moro, from where one of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Mediterranean can be enjoyed. Just under 40 kilometers for mountain bikers, the route up Monte Moro offers an extremely satisfying ride, both thrilling and easy. The same trails are also great for hikers, who can pause on natural terraces to admire the fabulous natural scenery and views of the sea. Cycling along the east coast is an unforgettable experience and offers the opportunity to explore the most picturesque beaches from a different angle. A 30-km route takes you to the most famous inlets of the area managed by the Costa Smeralda Consortium, from Rena Bianca to Romazzino by way of Razza di Junco, Liscia Ruja and Capriccioli, including a breathtaking stretch along the Pevero Health Trail.

For those who love horse, Giuseppe Cambuli’s La Prugnola ranch located inland in the Arzachena area has 24 horses available for exciting excursions. For the past fifteen years, the ranch’s expert instructors have been guiding visitors on a variety of trails among untamed nature, far from the crowded coast, to discover the craggiest and wildest of Gallura landscapes. Starting from the valley where the ranch lies, the approximately two-hour excursion, which is also suitable for beginners, follows the river Liscia before fording it on horseback. Along the way, the surrounding silence makes it possible to glimpse many species of Sardinia’s wildlife, such as the grey heron, which nests on the riverbanks, foxes, wild boar and Sardinian wildcat, elusive but not uncommonly seen.

Sardegna a cavallo

The Horse Club Baja Sardinia also offers visitors the chance to explore the area on daily excursions in the protected Golfo di Arzachena area. In the saddle of magnificent Sardinian Anglo-Arabs - a breed native to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia – you will experience the double thrill of being surrounded by the natural landscape of Gallura, and of being in harmony with these beautiful animals.
