Porto Cervo: what to see and where to eat

The best restaurants, hotels, boutiques and aperitifs in Sardinia's most luxurious resort

Founded sixty years ago in an unspoiled area north of Sardinia in Gallura, Porto Cervo has marked the epic of Italy's roaring summers, representing the pinnacle of international lifestyle connoted by strong Italian if not local elements, and an avant-garde in building development in harmony with the natural and well-preserved landscape. A distinct style, elaborated in the 1960s when Prince Kharim Aga Khan had the extraordinary insight to purchase this land, and no new development along the Coast has been authorized in the past 20 years, while every property owner is obliged to respect the aesthetic and architectural principles of the area.

These are some of the reasons why this jewel-like village overlooking the most beautiful sea in the Mediterranean is still the most important summer stage where elegance, style and good taste reign, welcoming every year the international jet set of politics, finance, business, culture, entertainment and sports. Porto Cervo has consolidated its role as a regular and unavoidable stop on the world luxury circuit that moves from Monte Carlo to Capri with its huge yachts. They come to admire the sea, which "here takes on particularly beautiful hues ranging from the darkest blue to the purest green. There are dozens of fine sandy beaches.... Rugged green and gray mountains descend abruptly to the water. A carpet of purple and yellow and red and blue flowers perfumes the air," said the Aga Khan.

It is home to the world's most exclusive yacht club, the most relaxing promenade, shopping is an experience where exhilarating aspirations for freedom and elegance mix to form a truly unique style, so much so that it ideally defines a special dress code to those about to visit for the first time, hospitality is colored by the most exclusive comforts among local stamps and services equaled only by the ultra-top of the international range, and dining offers only the best of each segment.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE

  • The historic center

The historic center of Porto Cervo is a unique mix of history, culture and nature. One of the most important places in Porto Cervo is the so-called Piazzetta, the heart of the village. Here you can stroll around enjoying the beautiful view of the harbor while the luxurious yachts docked at the quays are silhouetted on the horizon. For those who are interested in local history and want to treat themselves to a different day, Porto Cervo also offers several museums and galleries such as, for example, the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving.

  • Waterfront

Among the new additions for 2024, the new Waterfront is Porto Cervo's 'living room by the sea' in the setting of the Porto Vecchio, has once again become the main attraction for guests and visitors to Gallura, a chance to immerse themselves in an atmosphere that combines luxury, high fashion, glamour and design. The experience ranges from shopping and art to beautiful lounge bars and green areas that make the stay of its many guests even more enjoyable.

Waterfront Costa Smeralda

  • Stella Maris Church

Another must-see attraction in Porto Cervo-and one of the most interesting in Gallura-is the Stella Maris Church, a short walk from the center. This sacred building boasts a visionary architectural style, reminiscent of the works of Salvador Dali. This small architectural masterpiece designed by Michele Busiri Vici overlooks the sea, giving the coast an enchanting appearance. The church was completed in 1968, quickly becoming one of the most popular attractions on the Sardinian coast. The church has an imposing white facade with harmonious curves, decorated with a colorful mosaic, while inside you can admire a granite altar.

Stella Maris

It is here that you will find one of the most beloved stretches of coastline in Sardinia. Pevero beach is perhaps one of the most famous on the coast and will give you moments of pure wonder. Its crystal clear waters also make it perfect for snorkeling. Also not to be missed is the spectacular bay of Cala Volpe. The latter is wide and very white, protected by thick vegetation and overlooking an emerald sea that will leave you speechless. Cala Petra Ruja, on the other hand, is famous for its red pebbles that give the view a unique, almost Martian-like appearance. One of the most popular beaches in Porto Cervo, and also one of those closest to the center, is Prince's Beach. It can be reached easily and is enchanting. Regardless of which beach you choose to visit, know that you will find breathtaking scenery, clear waters, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of Sardinian nature.
